Is there a link between Global Warming and Earthquakes?
The Climate-Earthquake Hypothesis.

The following letters aim to alert political and academic leaders to my Climate-Earthquake hypothesis. I emphasize that this hypothesis is a basis for reasoning and discussion without any assumption about the truth. Hence, this hypothesis should be subjected to rigorous scientific testing, which will either refuse or support this idea. These scientific tests are crucial for our future, because if this hypothesis is true, then it might affect current policies concerning Climate Change and Earthquakes. Global leaders might concentrate on the wrong problems.

Re: Previous warning.
Dear Sir,
I repeat my warning of 7 June 2002 to the former Prime Minister the Rt. Hon. Helen Clark - "Extraordinary shifts in the Earth’s weight distribution from the poles to the equator are likely to disturb the tectonic plates. This would cause an increase in earthquakes and volcanic activity."
I proposed the hypothesis that global warming is likely to increase earthquakes and volcanic activity. Allegedly, increasing global temperatures have been melting glacial, mountainous, and polar ice for decades. Planetary spin and gravity moved melt water to different locations. Hence, the pressure of the Arctic and Antarctic ice on the tectonic plates has been reduced, while the pressure of water on the plates around the equator has increased. This redistribution of weight might affect the direction and speed of continental drift and therefore, it is likely to increase seismological activity. The frequency and magnitude of tsunamis and earthquakes during the last decade support my hypothesis.
I wrote to Mrs. Clark - "This is especially important for countries such as New Zealand, because it is located near an earthquake fault and shows considerable volcanic activity." Nevertheless, my prediction was ignored for almost a decade. The recent disasters suggest that the truth of my hypothesis should be urgently examined by your experts. Global and national policies concerning seismological threats might have to be reassessed.
I look forward to your response.
Sincerely yours,
Dr. Auke J. Schade

Re: Global Warming and Earthquakes.
Dear Sir,
Enclosed a copy of my letter of 12/03/2011 to the Prime Minister of New Zealand the Rt Hon John Key and the party leaders. I thought that my ideas about the possible cause of current earthquakes might interest you.
I look forward to your response.
Sincerely yours,

Re: Possible connection Global Warming and Earthquakes
Copy: Rt. Hon. John Key
Dear Mr. Parker,
Herewith a copy of my letter of 12/03/2011 to the Prime Minister the Rt. Hon. John Key.
In my letter of 7/6/2002 to the former Prime Minister the Rt. Hon. Helen Clark, I proposed the hypothesis that the alleged global warming could increase the frequency and magnitude of volcanic eruptions and earthquakes. Hypotheses do not claim validity or truth. They are the basis for scientific debate and testing. However, rising sea levels, volcanic eruptions, and earthquakes, could tentatively support my almost ten year old prediction. In addition, my hypothesis seems to make common sense and therefore, the evaluation of it might be important for decisions of where and how to rebuild Christchurch.
I wish you success in your difficult job and look forward to your response.
Sincerely yours,
Dr. Auke J. Schade

COMMENTS
1) 01-04-2011: Until today, no comments were received concerning the above letters.
2) 01-04-2011: I do not know whether humanity causes global warming. Neither do I know whether the reported increases in CO2 and atmospheric temperature are statistically significant. In addition, it could be argued that the weight of melt water that has shifted to the equator is very small in comparison to the weight of the tectonic plates. However, Laozi points out in Daodejing that nature is a composition of an infinite number of balances. He warns us that even a relatively small change in these balances might have large and unpredictable consequences. His warnings are relevant to our current global predicaments. For example, CO2 levels maintained a relative balance between energy entering and leaving our atmosphere. Apparently, a small increase of about two hundred particles per million changed our climate dramatically. This increase in CO2 seems to have caused an increase in atmospheric temperature of about 0.5 degrees Celsius over a period of 50 years. That is about 0.01 degrees Celsius per year. That is not much! Nevertheless, this tiny increase in temperature melted so much land ice that some people were already forced to migrate to higher ground. The shift of melt water towards the equator might be relatively small, but its weight could disturb the tectonic balance in the same way as the minute increases in CO2 and temperature have already affected the other balances.
